What might be perceived as mainstream can still be good. I mean, I know i'm in the significant minority of Megadeth fans who actually likes the album Risk, for example.
Like music you like, its the music you are listening to. Don't let "Ohmigosh, look at him now!" interrupt it. Its music.

My opinion differs. I think Oblivion was rather good, myself.

I think sometimes it is ok to download, but at the same time sometimes people go overboard. I can understand a few songs or albums here and there. But people who download entire libraries worth of music are crossing the fine line, IMO. Although I do wonder about how exactly filesharing with a large range of people and with friends is considered different in the legal sense.

Like I said before, the national minumum wage is pathetic and laughable, and a lot of people work for about that much money, and CDs and movies cost over $10 a pop. For some people that's nearly two hours of work. It's ridiculous.

You keep talking about the American minimum wage, you cant forget that the rest of the world with an internet connection can download music also. Im not defending anyone's argument, just stating that us Canadians can download music too, and so can poor kids in Columbia if they have a PC and a connection.

For some people that's nearly two hours of work. It's ridiculous. Perhaps if you are making minimum wage you should be more worried about improving your life through hard work than listening to and watching a few gigabites worth of music/videos/etc. I personally don't like people who want to complain about the economic position yet do nothing to try to improve it. Does the minimum wage need to be raised? Absolutely. For that matter, do companies need to be controlled by the government to help the common man be paid fairly and be able to afford living in this country? Definitely. But if you are working a low wage job, you should probably be more worried about improvement of that standing than downloading music and other such things. Rich or poor, I don't know of anyone who could be working hard and have time to use a library's worth of downloaded music and etc. The line I'm referring to is one of taking more than you need or could reasonably use. That's selfish and materialistic. Those are both traits of the people who wish to keep the minimum wage low. To connect one thread to another, this is like acting fascist to combat fascists. You can't be setting double standards where low wage earners can be selfish and materialistic while high wage earners must be saints and infinitely charitable.

You're arrogantly assuming an awful lot about me, you know. It just might have pissed me off a little bit.
For one, you think I'm the type of person who doesn't know how to work hard. That's completely uncalled for, and uninformed, but I really don't give a damn about your opinion. You can think what you want.
You're also assuming that I "do nothing" to improve the condition of my life. I happen to be a registered voter. Politics are a powerful tool. Yeah, I do make some statements about things I don't like in the world. That's why I remain active in the political process. I vote Green partially because one of their goals is to permanantly raise the minimum wage.
I also make it a habit to always be on time wherever I need to be, and at work to always do what needs to be done. I am not a slacker, and I do not have a massive collection of music just to download and listen to at home. I happen to listen to that music on the way to and from my job. And also in my ipod during break, and during my evening walk. I also have received several raises due to my outstanding job performances. To be quite blunt, I am a great guy and a hard worker. I'm usually quite modest, but it was you who put me in a position to brag so.
(This has been a heavily edited down version of the things I initially typed when I saw your crude post. How about in the future you refrain from such uncultured and unfounded personal attacks?)

Maybe you were just interpreting it as an attack, Pilaf. I think he was saying if you're making minimum wage, you'd be better off spending your money on the essentials anyway.

I download stuff because it'd be impossible to find the music I like in a record store. Exactly. And we all know what utter UK radio is. Even The Lockup, Radio 1's "punk rock" show is just full of screaming "hardcore" 90% of the time. So I download stuff off limewire to see if it's any good. If I like it then I'll try to buy it, but the music shops in Dundee suck sweaty cock so the only time I can get decent CD's is when I'm in Glasgow or Edinburgh. And you know your local scene sucks when One Man Race get support slots for half decent bands.

But what if the social situation in your area is quite frankly s hit? Yes the national minimum wage here needs to be raised, but some of us don't even earn that. I'm doing voluntary work right now because there's a slight glimmer of a chance it'll look good on my CV. Unemployment and youth crime here are a lot worse than people make out. And they make it out to be pretty bad. Believe me, I'd have a paying job if I could, but what can you do when there are no jobs? Example of one of the jobs I applied for in a shop: 1 place, 98 applicants. A lot of people here are desperate to get a job but it just isn't possible. That's why I can't wait to get away from here. Only 16 days left...

I will download a few songs here and there (about one from each album) but I almost always end up buying it. When the new album by The Roots comes out on tuesday, I plan on limewiring the bonus tracks and other stuff that you can only get with iTunes. I am not going to buy both the CD, and download the iTunes CD, and I choose to support my local music store rather than Apple. But I have no problem downloading the extra stuff after I have already bought the album.

Maybe you misunderstood me. THERE ARE NO JOBS. There are always jobs somewhere. I'd consider moving to a place where they have them. If you can't move, I'd bet the community you live in has some people who need others to do odd-jobs for them. Lawns to be mowed, windows to be cleaned, etc, etc. If not, again, maybe it's time to move to a new place. In any case, I hardly see how listening to music/watching movies/etc is a productive use of your time when you are unemployed. That's all I'm saying.

Art released to the public is for the public. If you don't want people to hear it, don't market it. Plus I like sticking it to the man.
