Well, I'd offer you a can of worms to open if you hadn't already opened one...
Obviously, there'd have to be stipulation for adoption.

I personally think marriage should be completely taken out of the legal spectrum. It should be a purely religious thing and can vary from group to group as much as you want. If you can get a religion to sanctify your relationship in the eyes of ([the] God/s) then more power to you.
Don't expect it to have any legal power, however.
Marriage and the government sanctioned recognition of unity between two people with a primary incentive of providing community stability is a far different thing. I guess one could shorten this to "civil unions". You should be able to have a civil union without being married (this would grant the normal rights and responsibilites granted to 'married' couples, this number is somewhere around 1,138), have a marriage without it being recognized by the state, and have both a civil union and religious marriage.
If Christians want to define marriage by their religious definitions, more power to them. Don't expect it to be in any relation to the government however.
Also, studies have shown that gay couples raise just as healthy of children as straight couples. If people used the "the children will be made fun of ticket", why did they decide to let blacks and whites marry? Back then if you were biracial you got it on both ends.

I agree that Civil Unions are probably the best alternative.

Note the fact I support the state staying out of marriage for EVERYONE. Gay and straight,
Civil unions only grant legal rights to gay or straight couples, marriage stands as an abstract religious insitution, completely out of government affairs.

Don't drag me into the debate on Gays or Straights please. I'm undecided. Before I thought that Gays were wrong and shouldn't be married now I'm not so sure. I've actually met some gay and homosexuals in real life and on the web and they seem alright. Civil Union was legalised here for Gays, there was a mass debate on it but it passed. After a year or so they fitted right in. No one mentions much on the matter anymore. People lose interest unless it's hardcore radicals or something. So I think they should have the right to be married and have the same rights.

Wow... mastab. I.. agree. 'nuff said really. The whole 'marriage is a product of the church used to syphon funds out of people' aspect was TOTALLY what I was going to say. Nice job of making me obsolete! ;D Also I, for the reasons put forth in comment, don't beleive in marriage as a legitimate institution. You're less financially culpable if you stay as independents anyway. If there was a non-church-based form of partnership (which would simply be the contract minus the wedding but plus the party) things would be much smoother. To annul the partnership would be like a business transaction where everyone wants the best outcome.. perhaps marital insurance paid each year (also government subsidised) could help resolve issues.. hmm. edit: ZOMG CIVIL UNIONS! gah i'm slow.

Yep, civil unions are a fine idea for everyone. There'll always be people complaining about gays encroaching on marriage, or civil unions just ain't good enough... but it's good enough for most people, right?
