This is not so much a story, rather one of my psuedo-scholarly musings...

Five thousand years after the extinction of the human race, a new biological form has taken shape. Sifting down through the relatively shallow depth of Earth's pages, this new lifeform discovers a curious layer, so thin, that at first it is dismissed as an anomoly along with another, deeper layer, which is only slightly thinner and was once called the "KT" boundary.

Upon closer examination of these two perplexing points in Earth's geologic storybook, striking differences from the other layers above and below have drawn closer scrutiny. Whereas, one is mostly black, the more recent is dominated by a bright, rusty-red color and interlaced with a myriad of tantalizing bits of ferrous mechanisms that vary from region to region.

It is deduced that some form of intelligent life must have been at play, albeit primitive, due to the fact that it only survived for just a nanosecond in Earth's geologic history. These tiny bits are catalogued, teased from the layer, and preserved in the Archives for future study and debate by the most learned minds.

Certain conclusions have been drawn, and it is agreed by most that only a global cataclysmic event would produce such thin layers. The presense of extra-terrestrial elements in the darker, deeper layer points to an event originating from outer space. What is still hotly debated to this day though, is that, since the reddish layer seems to be caused from a terrestrial origin... "How can an ancient lifeform, which has spent so little time upon this idyllic planet, have evolved to the point that it was capable of its own destruction?"[/i]
