So... a few of us have had a good run at this game, and we know the ins and outs of how it works, compared to it's closest predecessor, Morrowind. So what I want talk about with you guys is... what do you think about these changes? Which ones do you like, which ones could we have done without? I'll kick us off with a few. Most noticeably is the scenery, IMHO. Although I appreciated Morrowind's alien feel, I really love Cyrodiil... it's beautiful, with the endless forests, massive lakes, cozy towns and the inspiring Imperial City. Although I can only run it on medium, the graphics are the best I've seen, and there were times in the first couple of days that I couldn't stop a smile when I looked out over Anvil out to sea, or came over a hill to see miles of trees stretched out before me. Secondly is the quests. There's so much more to them now. Gone are the "go fetch" and "go kill" type things. Almost every quest seems to have a slight twist somewhere. Whether it be the lady in Anvil with a rat problem or collecting the journal from Fallen Rock Cave, the quests now have more substance, and you feel like you're making a difference. And you are. I recall doing a mission for the Fighters Guild, and folk often mention it now in the "Rumours" topic. Right, that should be enough to get you lot going.

Lets see... I loved Morrowind for it being different. Oblivion is more of the same medieval theme we've seen in other games. Admittedly I love Oblivion, but Morrowind will always be better in my mind. Less weapon types is kind of lame. I'm having plenty of fun with a sword, but I'd like to have more options for later... I mean, daggers and claymores are NOT the same kind of weapon, just like a club and battleaxe aren't the same. I love the quests. They're awesome. Especially the Mages' Guild. It feels like you're going places. And being knighted by Count Leyawiin? That was awesome. One thing I really liked was each city gets their own guard outfit. That was cool.

I think we can probably all say that the combat system finally feels like, well, a combat system. I love the hotkeys as well... makes things ALOT more fluid. I really feel like I have barely scratched the surface of the game after reading what all you other people have done I will always have a fondness in my heart for Morrowind of course, but I do think Oblivion is a better game in my opinion.

To be honest, Morrowind bored me, like this game much, much more With this game, not sure what it is but it has an interest hold on myself and can't stop playing As Ian stated, yes the Scenery is pretty, especially the "Paradise" area - img403.imageshack.us/my.php?image=paradise4fb.jpgLarger map/areas are greatly noted, as you can go mostly anywhere NPC's feel lifelike and actually have personalites, I tried grabbing some lady's boobs, but couldn't, ah well The marker how it helps you out with quests and the quick travel assisting, more easier for you I like the quests too, more fun, interesting, and twisting

I thought the quests were not much of a change, I still find myself doing those type of missions. the mix of loot and creature level wasn't a good mix. I do like the combat, could have been a bit more complex, instead of block, slash, slash, block, slash, slash. hovok. eh..that is all I can think of.

So... can anyone givem e a quick run down of the combat system sed in Oblivion? Morrowind's was a tad dull when you were fighting with melee weapons (never had a problem with magic or archery... well, unless i kept missing with the archery) but I was getting bored with just 3 ways to attack the enemy.
Sneak attacks from behind were fun though.

Sneak attacks from behind were fun though. It's more to do with player skill now than stats, although they have a significant inpact. On PC, you block with the right mouse and attack with the left. Power attacks can be done by holding the left button down. As you increase your skill with a weapon, you can do directional power attacks, which can disarm the enemy or even knock them to the ground. Sneak attacks are much the same, but you can increase beyond the standard 2x damage multiplier (my brother apparently did 6x damage to a sleeping person). So, gone is the slash/thrust/chop attack, and in with power attacks and perks. That gives you about 6 different attacks, if I'm counting correctly (standard, stationary power attack plus 4 directional ones).

More or less like Eek said... You attack with the left button, and block with the right. Blocking can be done bare handed, with a weapon, or with a shield. Naturally shields are more effective. Your attacks based on the weapon and your movement. So you have your standing attack, then the 4 main directions (forward, back, left, right). You can also hold down the attack button to do a power attack, also with the 5 possible styles. As you improve your skills, you gain perks. These usually improve damage, or give you a chance to stun or disarm. And damage now is guaranteed IF YOU HIT. So if your weapon makes physical contact with the enemy... you hit. There's no missing due to low skill or anything like that. But your skills and stats determine how much damage you can do (reduced by enemy armor and skills). So even though you can always hit if swinging in the right place (and they don't block) you might not do any noticable damage. Archery is now physics based. So arrows feel the pull of gravity. No more perfect shots across 3 miles.

Lovin it, besides the weapon exclusions and facial hair (which are small concerns) and certain removed scripting and modding features (this is not so small) they've improved everything.

NPC's are more interactive and real; when fighting they block, when just talking you can obviously see their disposition etc. etc. etc.
The scenery ZOMG! Brilliant!
The animations of the creatures and horses are amazing and I just love the game!
Combat is a bit of a shame; you've got iron, steel, fine iron/steel, silver and glass for so far but I got caught trying to steal a glass dagger at the Arcane University so I was like...fried Argonian on a stick :scowl:

Well I've finally really taken a look at the stealth aspects.. and I must say very impressed now. I joined the dark brotherhood and it is soooo fun. One quest you have to sneak back through the sewers and into your cell then across and kill the guy that taunts you in the very beginning, but for a bonus you aren't supposed to kill any guards (which are all over the sewers now..) it was really cool actually making a bit of noise and leading a guard away then scooting past him, using the shadows, all that stuff

There is a beard shader, but there are no real styles to choose from and nothing that goes past the face.

that's correct but you could always make a mod that does so *cough* hint *cough* other then that I loved that mission to. It was just so cool. I threw a helmet at a guard and he was like "What was that?" I was screaming "You frikkin' moron I thread a frikkin' helmet at your head!!!" at the screen. Strange enough he didn't hear me

Iron Steel Fine Steel Silver Dwarven Elven Mithril Orcish Ebony Glass Daedric
Those are the materials I've seen weapons of so far.
For armor, there's also:
Fur Leather Chain Imperial Plate Blackwood Company Plate
As well as the previous list of mats...
There's probably more that I can't recall at the moment...

Not really. There's a quest to infiltrate them, and then wipe them out. I just got myself a full set of their armor earlier though, but finding and ganking one of their members.

Cool. I'm stuck trying to close the Anvil and Leyawiin gates. I just can't do it.

Heh, the gates should be a joke when I get there... Full daedric armor, most of it with +Strength on it. A couple of artifacts... I'm kicking booty.

Sweet. I've got all Daedric, except the helm, and an enchanted Daedric claymore. It's slow going, though, and my guy gets his kicked by everything.

My armor's even betta. Well, not really betta, but I picked it over the full set of enchanted daedric I had. I owned those gates...well...after Kvatch, hated Kvatch.

I've got a Daedric helm with 120 foot Detect Life on it. It makes sneaking around incredibly easy.

Never got detect life to work, it just seems to do nothing. Might be a bug.

Should work... just equip it, and walk up to something. If you get the glowy aura stuff... then it's working. It's great when you can see where enemies are through dungeon walls and such. Makes avoiding guards great too.
